Warmups: What, Why, and How
Saturday June 13, 2026 8:30am - 9:30am PDT
Ever wonder why rehearsals start with a warm up? What's the point?  What's the meaning of life?

Okay, maybe we won't be able to answer the third one, but come dive in to a discussion on why the warmups can and should be the best part of your chorus or quartet rehearsal.

We'll chat about elements of a warm up, how to execute them with purpose, and why each part is important. A good warmup can help solve problems before they start, achieve your rehearsal goals, make you feel and sing better for the whole rehearsal, and help you achieve long-term goals.

And if you are already part of your rehearsal team, come exchange ideas to help refresh your warmups and make them even more fun and engaging.

Chorus Director Coaching Experience
Saturday June 13, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am PDT
Chapters that are bringing their choruses to be coached at HCNW 2026 will have the opportunity to make one of their coaching sessions be with Dr. Don Campbell coaching the musical director in front of and with the chorus participating. Dr. Don brings decades of experience conducting and teaching conducting at Harmony University, his university position, and throughout the U.S. and internationally. His teaching style is warm, confident, comprehensive, and focused on using gesture instead of words to communicate with choruses. Working alongside with the chorus allows the chorus to see their director being teachable and reinforces the team concept of music making.

HCNW Chorus
Saturday June 13, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am PDT
You don't need experience. You don't need a "perfect" voice. You just need to show up! Together, we'll explore the joy of harmony, the thrill of blending voices into something bigger than any one of us, and the quiet magic that happens when a group of people make music as one.

We'll learn. We'll laugh. We'll occasionally hit the wrong note — and laugh some more. Along the way, you'll discover your voice, build real friendships, and have some fun!

No auditions. No prerequisites. Just an open heart and a willingness to try. Your voice belongs here. Come find out what it can do!

This chorus will perform on the Saturday night show - make sure you sign up for all 4 rehearsals!

This will be an interactive class, so come ready to sing and ask questions!

Saturday June 13, 2026 11:00am - 12:00pm PDT
All of us who stand in front of choruses and desire to effectively lead them need to be continually developing and refining our physical conducting/directing gestures. This course will begin with the basics, which we ALL need to refresh, and will take us as far as time will allow based on the students enrolled. Regardless of the performance level of your chorus, as you improve your conducting, your chorus will sing better. You owe itto yourself and to your singers to continue to learn, grow and develop your conducting gestures.

Conflict Resolution
Saturday June 13, 2026 11:00am - 12:00pm PDT
We spend a lot of time talking about vocal harmony, but hardly at all about social harmony. This is important because so many singers leave quartets and choruses (or stop singing altogether) due to interpersonal problems, which we can all agree is a tragedy. In this class, we will practice stretching our own capacity for conflict and discuss various strategies for seeking clarity and connection through difficult conversations. An empathetic and collaborative approach will be utilized throughout.

Motivational Leadership
Saturday June 13, 2026 11:00am - 12:00pm PDT
Motivational leadership within a barbershop chorus is the practice of transforming a collection of individual voices into a single, resonant instrument through the power of shared vision and vocal unity. A truly motivational director or section leader acts not just as a conductor, but as a "salesman" for the music, igniting a passion for the lock and ring of a perfectly tuned chord. By fostering a culture of positivity and section pride, leaders inspire singers to embrace the discipline of vowel matching and precise synchronization not as a chore, but as a path to collective excellence. This leadership style prioritizes the growth of the individual—offering specific, encouraging feedback and celebrating small musical victories—while maintaining an atmosphere of humor and camaraderie that makes the rehearsal hall a lifeline for its members. Ultimately, motivational leadership in barbershop is about creating a safe space where every singer feels empowered to take risks, ensuring that when the chorus finally hits that ringing chord, it is a triumph of both musical craft and human connection.

Saturday June 13, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm PDT
All of us who stand in front of choruses and desire to effectively lead them need to be continually developing and refining our physical conducting/directing gestures. This course will begin with the basics, which we ALL need to refresh, and will take us as far as time will allow based on the students enrolled. Regardless of the performance level of your chorus, as you improve your conducting, your chorus will sing better. You owe itto yourself and to your singers to continue to learn, grow and develop your conducting gestures.

Get ‘Em In – Get ‘Em Back Again
Saturday June 13, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm PDT
"For many of us, recruiting new members resembles some sort of barbershop black hole. We’ve tried this and we’ve tried that. Nothing seems to work. And when lightning strikes and someone walks through our doors, we find ourselves fumbling for a process that contains elements that are appealing enough to make that person want to a) stay the night and, more importantly, b) comeback a second time. This session will offer a model and suggestions for getting them in the door and getting back that all-important second time. Come with ideas to share as well. Very little is new under the sun; we just haven’t seen it all.

What's Behind Powerful Performances?
Saturday June 13, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm PDT
We talk about trying to "connect with the audience" from the stage but what does that really mean? You know it when you feel it yet it's hard to describe what's actually happening in that magical moment. Explore the history of music and performance from the earliest human cultures through the lens of how it has shaped the way we connect as humans over the ages. Western science and thousands of years of religious traditions from all over the world have all demonstrated the benefits of singing together and for one another. Here, we will learn to amplify this power with breathwork, movement, meditation and playful dramatic exercises. Feel the difference for yourself as we build skills together to create powerful performances and even help us cultivate compassion as individuals and communities alike. Dress comfortably and be ready to let loose and have some fun a we learn and work together!

Navigating New Leadership
Saturday June 13, 2026 3:45pm - 4:45pm PDT
Navigating new leadership in a barbershop chorus is a delicate exercise in striking the right balance between honoring a storied legacy and steering the ensemble toward a fresh musical vision. For a new director or music team member, the first set on the riser is less about technical overhaul and more about building trust through transparency and active listening. Success in this transition requires a deep respect for the chorus’s established culture, while gradually introducing a new plan for musical growth that excites the membership. By collaborating closely with the administrative board and empowering section leaders, a new leader can ensure that change feels like a shared journey rather than a top-down mandate. Ultimately, navigating this shift effectively means prioritizing personal rapport—learning every singer's name and vocal strength—to transform the initial uncertainty of a leadership change into a unified, resonant energy that keeps the chorus stronger than ever.

Crafting a Comedy Routine
Saturday June 13, 2026 3:45pm - 4:45pm PDT
So, you're thinking about performing a comedy routine, eh? Are you clever and witty? Do you like dressing up? Can you speak clearly into a microphone? Can you sing well, move, AND deliver funny lines all at the same time? Come along then, and let's do this! Up to Something quartet members can help you get started. Beware, developing a 10-minute skit is a long more work than perfecting 2 songs. All you need is an idea, and undying dedicationg to process, a lot of extra time to learn dialogue, thematic costumes and potential costume changes, a few good songs, non-lethal props, and off you go!

This class is interactive with any and all suggestions being considered. UTS members will explain the process they've used for 10 years and give specific examples. Then, in small groups, y'all come up with something on your own. Bring a hat or prop, just for fun. Come prepared to to stretch your imagination and dive into the world of puns, sight gags, and the unexpected with Amy, Deb, Denise, and B Gail leading the way.
